Near Misses And Snow And Ice Procedures Raised At CWU Conference

Derek Maylor NW BTU Health & Safety Co-ordinators Committee Chairperson reports from CWU Telecom and Financial Services Conference in Bournemouth Tuesday 24th May 2011:

We have tried several times to get Near Miss reporting procedures up and running in the NW but it is still unsuccessful and learning opportunities are being missed. The Executive are to look at his with BT nationally to get the issue resolved so that we can use lessons from small incidents to prevent serious ones occurring.

BT’s snow and ice policy has been mentioned on this site previously, or more the lack of the policy’s implementation. Colleagues are being put at risk during severe weather due to non-gritting of car parks or non-clearance of fire exits following heavy snow fall for example. We will review the policy and more importantly implement recommendations before more people are injured unnecessarily.

Members’ with caring responsibilities need support from the company when requesting flexible working. Inflexible attitude of some management has led to enormous problems for some members which are then compounded by a refusal even to discuss legal rights. We will raise the issue as high as possible ensuring that BT pursues a more considerate approach.
